Although many of Vineyard Haven's historic buildings were destroyed by fire in 1833, there are several historic homes that survived and continue to stand proudly on William Street, overlooking the harbor.

It has a lively Main Street shopping district and is the home of the world renowned Black Dog Co. and Black Dog Restaurant, as well as a number of other fine restaurants and shops. The Mansion House at the head of Main Street is one of the Island’s finest hotels at boasts not only a great restaurant, but a pool, gym and spa. Recreation abounds in and around Vineyard Haven. The Manuel F. Correllus State Forest is a 5100 acre rural park that features an extensive trail system that draws mountain bikers, roller bladers, and hikers in the summer and cross-country skiing enthusiasts during winter months. There are bike rental shops if you do not want to bring along your own. In addition to enjoying the beach (always a favorite), one can go kayaking or windsurfing in the harbor, on Lake Tashmoo, or in the Lagoon. Kayak and windsurf board rentals are easily rented through Wind's Up at the edge of the village.
