Several ferries and private boat companies provide island access from the mainland of Massachusetts, including Woods Hole, Falmouth, and New Bedford. Dogs are welcome on board the major ferries that service Martha’s Vineyard, and typically no additional charge. However, there are some rules to keep in mind while planning your trip.

Pets must be accompanied by a responsible passenger, who will maintain control of and provide care for their animal. Owners are required to clean up after their pets and to keep them on a leash or in a carrier. Please be aware that pets are not permitted in food service areas, on seats, or on tables. Some ferries may have a designated area for dogs and their people, where you can enjoy the ride to MV together.

Dog-Friendly Beaches in Martha’s Vineyard

Nothing says Martha’s Vineyard dog-friendly vacation like frolicking on the beach with man’s best friends. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the specific rules for the beaches closest to your vacation rental or those on your itinerary. Rules regarding leashes vary by season and location, so stay informed.

It is important to note that access to certain sections of the beach may be restricted during bird nesting season or for other conservation efforts. Please read and abide by all posted signage.

Lambert’s Cove Beach (West Tisbury)

Lambert’s Cove is a scenic beach that welcomes both visitors and their dogs for much of the year. From September 16th through June 14th, dogs are permitted throughout the day. During the peak summer season, June 15th through September 15th, dogs may visit between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM.

Norton Point Beach (Edgartown)

Norton Point is one of Martha’s Vineyard’s most dog-friendly beaches, particularly outside of the summer months. From mid-September until April 1st, dogs can enjoy the beach off-leash. However, access is restricted during bird nesting season, with certain sections reopening later in the season for leashed dogs, depending on wildlife activity.

Lighthouse Beach & Fuller Street Beach (Edgartown)

Located on opposite ends of the same stretch of shoreline, Lighthouse Beach and Fuller Street Beach allow dogs year-round, with restrictions during the peak summer season. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, dogs are permitted before 9:00 AM and after 5:00 PM.Some areas may be temporarily closed during nesting season to protect local wildlife. Known for their coastal charm and tranquil atmosphere, these beaches offer a relaxing destination for dog owners and their pets.

Inkwell Beach (Oak Bluffs)

Inkwell Beach is a popular waterfront destination where leashed dogs are welcome. Between May 15th and September 15th, dogs are permitted before 8:00 AM and after 5:00 PM. Its convenient location near Oak Bluffs’ shops, restaurants, and attractions makes it an excellent place to enjoy a walk along the shoreline with your four-legged companion.

Please note that dogs are not allowed at South Beach or Bend in the Road Beach at any time.
