Is There Good Hiking in Martha’s Vineyard?
Yes! With more than 220 miles of public walking trails in Martha’s Vineyard, hiking is one of the best ways to experience the natural beauty of this coastal escape. Guests can explore many different nature and wildlife preserves, getting views of coastal cliffs, lighthouses, native shorebirds, and much more.
What are the Best Hikes in Martha’s Vineyard?
Menemsha Hills
If you want a hike with a little bit of everything, start at Menemsha Hills Reservation in Chilmark. The 3.7-mile Cobble Stone Beach Loop climbs through woods to Prospect Hill, which sits 308 feet above sea level and is one of the highest points on Martha’s Vineyard. Continue toward the shoreline, and you’ll encounter rocky cliffs, Cobble Stone Beach, and remnants of Chilmark’s 19th-century brickmaking industry. With 383 feet of elevation gain, it’s also one of the few island hikes that will give your legs a bit of a workout.

Peaked Hill Loop
Want to stand at the highest point on Martha’s Vineyard? Head to Peaked Hill in Chilmark. The 1.7-mile loop climbs to the island’s 311-foot summit, where you can look toward the south shore, Aquinnah, Menemsha Bight, the Elizabeth Islands, and the Massachusetts mainland on a clear day. The landscape also holds remnants of a U.S. Army Signal Corps station and later radar installation, including old concrete foundations and fortifications.

Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary
Cedar Tree Neck is a good reminder that some of the island’s prettiest places take a little effort to reach. Located in West Tisbury, at the end of a long, narrow dirt road, this remote location may quickly become one of your favorite spots if you’re looking for some peace and quiet during your getaway. Once you’re there, you’ll find well-trodden paths that wind along beautiful wetlands and along Vineyard Sound. For a shorter outing, AllTrails has a 1.5-mile route that leads past gorgeous beach views and along tree-shaded paths; longer routes are available if you want more time on the trails.

Waskosim’s Rock Reservation
For something completely different, take the 2.2-mile loop through Waskosim’s Rock Reservation. Its namesake is a massive glacial boulder sitting along a ridge, but the rock is more than a geological curiosity: it served as a landmark along a boundary between English settlers and Wampanoag land during the colonial era. The surrounding trails pass old stone walls and other traces of the land’s agricultural past, making this one of the more interesting hikes for travelers who like a little history with their time outdoors.

Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary
Bring your binoculars for this one. Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary protects nearly 200 acres around Sengekontacket Pond, and its trails cross sandplain grasslands, freshwater wetlands, pitch pine woods, and salt marshes. The 1.2-mile Sassafras, Shad, Shoreline, and Old Farm Trail Loop gives you several of those habitats in one short walk, with plenty of opportunities to look for birds around the coves and marshes.

Sheriff’s Meadow Sanctuary
You don’t have to drive up-island to find a good walking trail. Sheriff’s Meadow Sanctuary is just outside downtown Edgartown, making its 0.6-mile loop easy to work into a day of sightseeing. The largely flat trail circles Sheriff’s Pond and passes through meadow and salt marsh habitat, with views toward Eel Pond and Nantucket Sound. It’s a particularly good choice for families, beginners, or anyone who wants to get outside without turning the outing into a major part of the day.

What to Bring with You When Hiking in Martha’s Vineyard
Most Martha’s Vineyard hiking trails don’t require technical hiking gear, but you’ll still want to come prepared. Bring comfortable walking or hiking shoes, plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, and a light layer if you’ll be near the water, where conditions can be cooler and windier.
Tick repellent is another important addition to your bag. Ticks are common on Martha’s Vineyard, so use an EPA-registered insect repellent and consider treating clothing and gear with permethrin before your trip. Stay toward the center of trails when possible and avoid brushing against tall grass and vegetation. After your hike, check your clothing, gear, pets, and body carefully for ticks.
It’s also worth downloading the free TrailsMV app before heading out. The app includes trails from conservation organizations across Martha’s Vineyard and can help you navigate areas where cell service is limited.
